Who is responsible

Reading the site

You can read the publication without signing up. Requests to the site include technical information such as your IP address, requested URL, browser information and time of access. Our hosting and security providers process this to deliver pages, prevent abuse and investigate faults. This serves our legitimate interest in operating a reliable, secure publication under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

We do not use advertising trackers, sell reader data or track newsletter opens and link clicks. Necessary cookies or local storage may be used for account sessions, preferences and security. External links lead to services with their own privacy practices.

Signing up provides your email address for the future reStruggle AI newsletter: a launch email and subsequent editions. We send a confirmation email before activating the signup. No regular newsletter editions are being sent yet.

Ghost also creates a free reader account so you can sign in and manage your subscription. We store your email address, subscription preferences and the account and confirmation records needed to provide that service. A name is optional. Newsletter emails rely on your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR; account access and requested sign-in emails are provided under Article 6(1)(b).

You may withdraw newsletter consent at any time through your account, an unsubscribe link in a newsletter, or by emailing us. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing. Unsubscribing stops newsletter delivery; ask us separately if you would also like your reader account deleted.

Contacting us

If you email us, we process your address, message and any information you choose to include to answer your request. This is based on our legitimate interest in responding to readers under Article 6(1)(f), or Article 6(1)(b) where your request concerns a service we provide to you.

Service providers

Netcup GmbH hosts the publication and its subscriber database on servers in Germany.
Cloudflare, Inc. delivers and protects web traffic. This involves processing request information, including IP addresses, through its international network. Encrypted backups are stored in Cloudflare R2 with EU jurisdiction. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Amazon Web Services provides Amazon SES in the Frankfurt region to deliver confirmation and account emails. Your recipient address and message content must be processed to send those emails. See AWS privacy information.
Ghost is the publishing and membership software running on our server. The site may load functional Ghost components from a content delivery network; those requests disclose ordinary connection information to that network.

Cloudflare and AWS may involve processing outside the European Economic Area. Their published data-processing terms provide for transfer safeguards, including standard contractual clauses where applicable. You can contact us for information about the safeguards relevant to your data.

How long we keep information

We keep account details while you maintain an account and subscription details while you remain subscribed. When you ask for deletion, we remove information that is no longer needed. A limited record may be retained where necessary to document consent, meet a legal obligation or resolve a dispute. Operational logs are retained for security and fault investigation; records relating to an unresolved incident may be needed until it is resolved. Encrypted backups retain all recovery points from two days, seven daily points, four weekly points and three monthly points. Deleted information may remain in restricted backup copies until those copies expire; an account restored from backup is reconciled with deletion requests before sending further email.

Your choices and rights

Subject to the conditions in the GDPR, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of your data. You may object to processing based on legitimate interests and withdraw consent for future processing.

You may also complain to a data protection authority, including the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

Providing an email address is voluntary, but we need one to confirm a signup or provide a reader account. We do not make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about readers.
